Welcome to
windsorartgallery.com, the online gallery dedicated to promoting Woodland art. The
Woodland style and school was developed by the
masterful talent of Norval Morrisseau. Seeing
the traditional way of life of the great Ojibwa people slowly being lost,
Norval Morrisseau found his calling in a vision that changed his life forever
– to paint the legends of the Ojibwa, so as to strengthen the pride in
his people’s beliefs and to educate others in a more humanistic point of
view and philosophy; thus, the Woodland style was born. Norval Morrisseau,
Copper Thunderbird, was born March 14, 1932 on Sand Point Ojibwe Reserve, near Beardmore, Ontario north
of Thunder Bay. Norval Morrisseau is the founder of the Woodland school.
Norval Morrisseau’s work has been inspirational to at least three
generations of artists that number in the hundreds. Norval Morrisseau has received awards and honours
of the highest level too numerous to mention, including the Order of Canada in
1978. Norval Morrisseau was elected to
the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Here you will find images from several very
well known Woodland artists, including Norval Morrisseau, Sam Ash, Clemence
Wescoupe, Brian Marion, Christian Morrisseau, Joshim Kakegamic and Mark
Seabrook. You will also find links to
other interesting sites and recommended reading for further in depth study of
Norval Morrisseau and other Woodland artists,
thus comprising a broad resource for some of the best information and images
available online.
