Sam Ash
Sam Ash is from Sioux Lookout
and was born in 1951. Born Ojibwa, he was adopted by a Metis couple after
his mother died during childbirth. He began painting at age 6 when he
went to the Ontario School for the Deaf in Belleville. Over time, his paintings would
grace the collection at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull
and the Dennos Museum
Center in Traverse City Michigan.
From the start he received acclaim for his excellent application of paint and
boldness in design; his haunting designs are often fluid, appearing as the
subject matter of dreams. Despite the demand for his work, he stopped painting
in 1992 suffering personal difficulties and tribulations. “Rising from
the Ashes” was the headline in the Toronto Star hailing his comeback show in
2005. The show was a triumphant success, bringing in $40,000 while
selling almost all of the 60 works on display.
